Over the course of two days, we took a deep-dive into real-world industrial use-cases. #BAS21 addressed the ethical and societal challenges of human-machine interaction. The extensive international programme was filled with around 70 presentations, panels, and workshops from more than 120 speakers on two stages. This gave more than 3,000 participants the chance to learn and network with like-minded AI enthusiasts and Big Data experts. We are also grateful for the support of our 21 partners.
The highlights of the first day included not only the opening speeches of Bitkom’s president Achim Berg and German Federal Minister of Labour Hubertus Heil, but also the presentation by Apple’s AI VP John Giannandrea. Other highlight speakers on this day included: Cedrik Neike (Member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG and CEO Digital Industries, Siemens), Prof Dr Bernhard Schölkopf (Director, Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems), Dr Xu Feiyu (Senior Vice President & Global Head of AI, SAP), Anabel Diaz Calderon (Regional General Manager EMEA, Uber), and Prof Dr Antonio Krüger (CEO, German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence).
Another important highlight of day one is the programme session that took place in a fully virtual world, namely “The Future of AI”. Three female start-up founders presented their AI solutions that are directly influencing the industries of energy, mobility, and health in a future-driven, innovative way. This virtual session was wrapped up with an art exhibition presenting artistic creations by AI algorithms.
On the second day, more highlights awaited the participants: a walk back down the AI memory lane by Dr John Cohn (Chief Scientist, MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab) and insightful presentations by Li Shiwei (Vice President Tencent Cloud Europe, Tencent Cloud) as well as Mustafa Suleyman (Co-Founder of DeepMind & VP AI, Google). This year, we were also excited to welcome His Excellency Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications, United Arab Emirates for the first time to present at #BAS21. Further fascinating speakers included: Sana Khareghani (Head of the Office for AI, Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland), Dr Jason Matheny (Deputy Director for National Security, Office of Science and Technology Policy, The White House), and Uli Homann (Corporate Vice President, Microsoft).
